Statement by Ambassador Gharibabadi on UNIDO and Corona

Mr. Li Yong, the Director General of UNIDO,

Excellencies, dear colleagues,

I take this opportunity to express my appreciation to the Director General of UNIDO and his team in secretariat for their commendable efforts during this tough time which closely engaged with member states to tackle challenges. And also I would like to thank the DG for his briefing and also for organizing this session to exchange views on the latest developments and our collective measures against the spread of Covid-19. I would like associate myself with the statement of G77 and China which was delivered by Ambassador of Malaysia.

All of us are at a crucial juncture due to the world-wide outbreak of Covid-19. The numbers of infected and dying people from all layers of the societies are still high in the world. We must continue to coordinate our efforts to avoid a devastating impact on people’s lives and livelihoods.

This pandemic requires a large-scale, coordinated, comprehensive multilateral response to support countries in need, enabling them to recover better for more prosperous and resilient and inclusive economies and societies.

The world-wide outbreak of the Corona virus, in spite of its sorrowful and adverse implications, created positively a new atmosphere of friendship and solidarity among all States to fight collectively against this deadly and devastating Virus.

We deplore any decision, effort, or position such as unilateral economic sanctions including on independent states or the cut off funding to international organizations, which undermine the capacity of national, regional and international community to fight the spread of Corona virus and its deadly consequences. No doubt that, such decisions has also adverse impacts on humanity at large, across the globe.

Finally, as we have collective responsibility for better world and in order to pass these challenges, we have to work together as a global community. To this end, we support collective actions to enable a recovery that leads to more inclusive, sustainable and resilient economies, where no one is left behind.
